HFVC Present at UN Conference in Geneva

May 14th to 15th 2013 - Geneva, Switzerland

HFVC Chief Executive Marion Schumann and Chief Operating Officer Dominic Pinkney were invited to present at the United Nations Conference on Volunteerism in Geneva. Held at the UN’s prestigious Palais des Nations, volunteering organisations from around the world met to share information and best practice on volunteering.

Representing England, the Hammersmith & Fulham Volunteer Centre (one of the largest Volunteer Centres in London), was invited to share its experiences and expertise in engaging businesses in the community. Through its social enterprise, Works4U, HFVC has been helping businesses to work in the community for over 10 years.

The UN conference delegates, particularly from Russia and Greece, were interested to hear how Works4U works with businesses: As well as sharing its own experiences, HFVC was interested to learn about the volunteering work carried out in other countries. Countries such as Bosnia and Greece who are experiencing economic and social hardship are actively trying to use volunteering to help build social cohesion and contribute to the development of their nation’s situation.

There were many representatives from Russia, particularly some very impressive young volunteers who displayed great passion and commitment to volunteering. Marion Schumann, who can speak fluent Russian, was in her element and within a few hours of arriving at the Conference had already built a network of new contacts and friends.

It is very much hoped that HFVC can continue to stay in touch with the organisations who attended the Conference and where possible develop ways to support and help each other in their volunteering endeavours.
